A German writer currently living in Potsdam, she made her debut in 2001 with the novels Offene Blende (dtv) and Snowed Under (dtv). Since then she has published regularly every few years, has been nominated for and awarded multiple German prizes, and in 2021 won the most prestigious German Book Prize for her novel Blaue Frau (S. Fischer). In addition to novels, she also writes essays, short stories and non-fiction texts and has published a book on Sweden. She belongs to a generation of German writers and novelists who were born in the East Germany, but started publishing after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her work often explores themes from recent history and topics related to LGBT identity and life. Strubel also works as a literary translator from English and Swedish (she has translated Joan Didion, Lena Andersson, Monika Fagerholm, Lusia Berlin and Virginia Woolf, and many others, into German).
