A German journalist and writer, he studied literature, history and art history in Freiburg and completed his doctorate in Berlin. For many years he worked as a freelance journalist and literary critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, then editor at the Berliner Zeitung. From 2011 to 2021, he served as honorary professor of journalism at the Berlin University of the Arts. In 2019, he won the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for his book Aftermath. Life in the Fallout of the Third Reich, 1945–1955, which was published in Poland in a translation by Arkadiusz Żychliński (Poznańskie publishing house). A Polish translation of Höhenrausch. Das kurze Leben zwischen den Kriegen, in which he writes about the time of the Weimar Republic, will be published in August 2023 (translated by Monika Kilis, Poznań publishing house).
