A Professor of Social Sciences and a historian working at the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, he is also an honorary professor at the Freie Universität in Berlin. A sociocultural animator and the founder of the Borussia Cultural Community (1990) based in Olsztyn, he has been the editor-in-chief of the Borussia magazine for over 20 years and has authored exhibitions in Poland and Berlin (Wir Berliner! 2009). For 13 years, he was the co-chairman of the Polish-German Textbook Committee and he co-authored the second bilateral history textbook in the world. The most important of his more than 30 book publications include Wschodniopruskość. Tożsamość regionalna i narodowa w Prusach Wschodnich (four editions, last in 2022) and nine volumes of Polsko-niemieckie miejsca pamięci| Deutsch-Polnische Erinnerungsorte (together with Hans Henning Hahn). His current focus is on cultural history, social memory and difficult heritage in the regional and European perspective.
